Abstract
Ninety-four healthy men, with a mean age of 43.7 years, were analyzed for the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea and blood pressure.
- Seventy-three percent of participants had obstructive sleep apnea, indicated by an apnea-hypopnea index greater than or equal to 5.
- Urinary catecholamines were positively correlated with the severity of sleep apnea, independent of obesity.
- Blood pressure measurements were associated with age, obesity, severity of sleep apnea, and urinary catecholamines.
- Sleep indices and urinary catecholamines were identified as independent factors influencing morning systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
- Evening blood pressure was associated with urinary catecholamines and waist circumference, with morning cortisol also affecting diastolic blood pressure.
- Obstructive sleep apnea and sympathetic activity may significantly influence daytime blood pressure in overweight middle-aged men without overt cardiometabolic diseases.
