How SGLT2 Inhibitors May Protect Brain Cells in Alzheimer's Disease

Updated

Abstract

Fifty-seven genes were identified as common targets for SGLT2 inhibitors and differentially expressed in Alzheimer's disease.

  • SGLT2 inhibitors may influence Alzheimer's disease by targeting specific genes associated with the condition.
  • The transporters SLC5A11 and SLC2A1 were significantly upregulated in the brains of Alzheimer's patients.
  • Pathway analysis indicated involvement in the MAPK and FoxO signaling pathways, which are linked to cell death, recycling, and oxidative stress.
  • Key hub proteins related to SGLT2 inhibitors include ERBB2, HSP90AA1, DPP4, and SLC2A1.
  • It is hypothesized that SGLT2 inhibitors could provide neuroprotective effects by normalizing MAPK/FoxO signaling and restoring cellular balance.
