Dehydroepiandrosterone and high-fat diet together may cause polycystic ovary syndrome in rats

Updated

Abstract

DHEA combined with a high-fat diet resulted in obesity and disrupted reproductive cycles in treated rats.

  • Both DHEA and DHEA + high-fat diet groups lost regular estrous cycles and exhibited polycystic ovarian changes.
  • Rats treated with DHEA + high-fat diet had significantly higher serum fasting insulin and testosterone levels.
  • Increased protein levels of ovarian steroid hormone synthases StAR, 3β-HSD2, and CYP11A1 were observed in both treatment groups.
  • The DHEA + high-fat diet group also showed elevated fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, dihydrotestosterone, anti-Müllerian hormone levels, and LH:FSH ratios.
