Plant polysaccharides reduce ulcerative colitis in mice by affecting gut hormone signaling, with differences between plant parts

Abstract

Stem polysaccharide (DHPS) from Dendrobium huoshanense demonstrated the strongest efficacy in alleviating ulcerative colitis symptoms.

  • Different parts of Dendrobium huoshanense contain polysaccharides that vary in molecular weight, composition, and structure.
  • Stem polysaccharide (DHPS) improved epithelial integrity, mucus barrier, and reduced inflammation in a mouse model of ulcerative colitis.
  • The beneficial effects of DHPS on ulcerative colitis were correlated with increased levels of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1).
  • The action of DHPS was mediated through GLP-1 receptor signaling, as blocking this receptor negated its effects.
  • Alterations in gut microbiota due to DHPS treatment did not contribute to its anti-inflammatory effects.
