The prevalence of depression among the general public during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic was 13.6%.

  • Feeling stressed and helpless was positively associated with higher depression levels.
  • Persistent worry, even with support, correlated with increased depression.
  • Repeated cleaning and hoarding behaviors were linked to greater depressive symptoms.
  • Social support and a calm demeanor were associated with lower levels of depression.
