Early resveratrol exposure causes different blood vessel effects in adult rats: protective in high blood pressure rats but harmful in normal rats

Abstract

Parental resveratrol supplementation reduced systolic blood pressure in adult female offspring from hypertensive rats.

  • Oxidative stress and MMP-2 activity may be reduced in adult offspring from hypertensive rats exposed to resveratrol.
  • Improved endothelium-dependent relaxation was observed in male offspring from hypertensive rats after resveratrol treatment.
  • In contrast, resveratrol exposure was associated with oxidative stress in normotensive offspring.
  • Parental resveratrol increased aortic cross-sectional area in female normotensive offspring, suggesting adverse vascular remodeling.
  • These results indicate a context-dependent effect of resveratrol based on the hypertension status of the offspring.
