Blood clotting patterns in COVID-19 patients in intensive care: a single-center retrospective study

Abstract

High concentrations of D-dimer and fibrinogen were frequently observed in ICU patients with severe COVID-19.

  • Prolonged clotting time was noted in select cases.
  • No severe thrombocytopenia was found among the patients.
  • All patients had a high risk of thromboembolic complications according to the Padua score.
  • Clotting abnormalities did not meet the criteria for disseminated intravascular coagulation or sepsis-induced coagulopathy.
  • The coagulation profile observed in these patients differs from those typically seen in recognized sepsis.
