Dietary Antioxidants and Plant Compounds Linked to Blood Vessel Health and Thinking Abilities in Aging and Brain Diseases

Updated

Abstract

Evidence from studies indicates that polyphenol-rich interventions, such as the Mediterranean diet, are associated with reductions in carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and improvements in cognitive function.

  • Dietary antioxidants and polyphenols may exert protective effects on vascular and brain health through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant mechanisms.
  • Increased oxidative stress and vascular aging are linked to cognitive decline, particularly in older adults and those with neurodegenerative disorders.
  • Reductions in CIMT and enhancements in cognitive domains, including memory and attention, are observed with polyphenol-rich dietary interventions.
  • Changes in brain imaging biomarkers and cerebrovascular perfusion may also result from these dietary interventions.
  • Further long-term studies are necessary to establish optimal dietary approaches for preventing atherosclerosis and cognitive decline.
