Link between fiber in diet and depression symptoms before and during COVID-19

Essence

Higher energy-adjusted dietary fibre was linked to fewer depressive symptoms before COVID-19, but this pattern was largely attenuated during the pandemic.

Evidence

This NHANES cross-sectional analysis used 24-hour recalls and PHQ-9 data from 7,513 pre-pandemic and 4,680 pandemic-period adults; each 5 g higher energy-adjusted fibre was linked to lower depression prevalence before the pandemic but not during it.

Caveat

The observational, recall-based design cannot show that fibre intake prevents depressive symptoms, and pandemic-period subgroup results differed by gender.
