Links between types of food eaten, faster biological aging, and mild inflammation in the Lifelines-DEEP group

Abstract

In a study of 691 participants, overall diet quality significantly influenced epigenetic age acceleration, particularly measured by the PCGrimAge clock.

  • Higher consumption of high-energy beverages and NOVA4 foods was positively associated with epigenetic age acceleration.
  • Intake of vegetables and tea was inversely associated with epigenetic age acceleration.
  • The relationship between diet quality and epigenetic age acceleration involved both direct effects and mediation through low-grade inflammation levels.
  • For other analyzed epigenetic clocks, dietary associations were not significant after accounting for the influence of low-grade inflammation.
