How Different Breakfast Proteins Affect Hunger, Appetite Hormones, and Later Eating in Young and Older Adults

Essence

A 30 g plant-based protein breakfast drink matched an animal-based high-protein breakfast for satiety hormone and appetite effects, and both outperformed a low-protein high-carbohydrate breakfast.

Evidence

This within-subject counterbalanced crossover study in 18 healthy adults, including 12 under 35 and 6 over 65, compared breakfast effects on self-rated appetite, GLP-1, PYY, and later ad libitum energy intake.

Caveat

This was a small acute study with only six older adults, and it found no difference in subsequent ad libitum energy intake.
