Daily timing changes the balance of nerve cell activity and seizure risk in two memory-related brain areas

Updated

Abstract

In male adult ICR mice, circadian cycles are associated with divergent seizure thresholds in the dentate gyrus and CA1 regions of the hippocampus.

  • Seizures in temporal lobe epilepsy occur more frequently during the day than at night.
  • Dentate gyrus granule cells exhibit increased intrinsic excitability at night.
  • CA1 pyramidal neurons show heightened synaptic excitability during nocturnal phases.
  • Distinct circadian patterns influence the excitatory and inhibitory balance in hippocampal neurons.
  • The diurnal-nocturnal seizure threshold pattern in CA1 mirrors that observed in pilocarpine-induced seizures.
