Ayahuasca components dimethyltryptamine and harmine may prevent cocaine-caused cell death in human nerve cells

Updated

Abstract

Essence

DMT and harmine partly protected SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells from cocaine-induced toxicity and apoptosis.

Evidence

This in vitro cell experiment exposed SH-SY5Y cells for 48 h to DMT, harmine, cocaine, and selected co-treatments, then measured viability, apoptosis, and Bax, Bcl-2, and caspase-8 expression.

Caveat

The evidence is limited to a neuroblastoma cell model using cocaine concentrations up to 5 mM, so it does not show neuroprotection or substance-use-disorder effects in humans.
