Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 disrupts fat cell development by reducing hormone signals in stressed mice

Updated

Abstract

On day 14 under chronic stress, stress decreased the weights of adipose tissue and resulted in harmful changes in plasma and tissue protein levels.

  • Chronic psychosocial stress is associated with detrimental alterations in adipose tissue and plasma levels of key proteins.
  • Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) deficiency mitigates the harmful effects of chronic stress on adipose tissue.
  • Activation of the GLP-1 receptor and deletion of cysteinyl cathepsin K (CTSK) produce similar beneficial effects on adipose tissue as DPP4 deficiency.
  • In vitro studies show that silencing CTSK prevents stress-induced adipocyte differentiation, while its overexpression facilitates it.
  • Increased DPP4 may negatively regulate the GLP-1/adiponectin-CTSK axis during chronic stress.
