Factors influencing how British Columbia's drug decriminalization pilot is carried out: A detailed review

Abstract

In January 2023, British Columbia became the first Canadian province to decriminalize possession of 2.5 g or less of certain illicit drugs.

The decriminalization policy was intended to shift the perception of substance use from a criminal issue to a public health concern.
Goals included reducing stigma associated with drug use and enhancing access to health and social services.
Following the pilot's conclusion in January 2026, criminal penalties for drug possession were reinstated in most public areas in May 2024.
