Changing brain structure patterns linked to mental health symptoms in long COVID

A longitudinal study of 144 individuals with long COVID revealed specific brain structure changes associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms over time.

  • Neuropsychiatric symptoms in long COVID were linked to coordinated structural patterns across various brain regions.
  • These associations intensified from 1 to 3 months post-infection and were not observed in healthy controls.
  • A stable cognitive-affective symptom dimension exhibited the strongest connection to brain structure changes.
  • Reduced grey matter volume in the right cuneus and superior frontal gyri was associated with poorer executive function one year later.
  • Decreased cortical thickness in the left supramarginal gyrus was linked to greater fatigue one year post-infection.
