AD mice exhibited significant cognitive dysfunction and neuronal damage alongside altered gut microbiota composition.

  • Cognitive dysfunction in AD mice was associated with notable neuronal damage and the formation of Aβ plaques in specific brain regions.
  • The composition of gut microbiota in AD mice showed decreased diversity and significant differences from control mice.
  • Activation of enteric glial cells (EGCs) in the myenteric and submucosal plexuses was significantly increased in AD mice.
  • A reduction in neuronal count was observed in conjunction with the activated EGCs, indicating a disruption in EGC-neuron interactions.
  • The observed changes in EGC activation and gut microbiota were region-specific within the enteric nervous system.
