Abstract
Patients admitted to the ICU with severe COVID-19 showed elevated levels of the complement activation marker sC5b-9, correlating with disease severity and length of hospitalization.
- Elevated sC5b-9 levels were found in ICU patients compared to ward patients and healthy controls.
- All soluble complement inhibitors measured were elevated in ICU patients, indicating a complex response to infection.
- Factor H levels positively correlated with sC5b-9, suggesting a relationship between complement activation and inhibition.
- Endothelial cells exposed to serum from ICU patients displayed increased susceptibility to complement attack.
- In patients with long COVID, levels of Factor H and C4BP remained elevated compared to pre-pandemic healthy controls.
- Severe COVID-19 may involve extensive complement activation despite high levels of circulating inhibitors, indicating impaired local regulation.
