Protein RNF126 may contribute to obesity by triggering removal of damaged cell power sources through the PINK1/Parkin pathway

Updated

Abstract

RNF126 deficiency in mice on a high-fat diet led to significantly increased body weight gain and metabolic dysfunctions.

  • RNF126 deficiency was associated with elevated serum liver enzymes, inflammatory responses, and insulin resistance.
  • Histological analysis revealed increased hepatic inflammation, lipid droplet accumulation, and enlarged fat cells in Rnf126 deficient mice.
  • High-fat diet feeding reduced RNF126 expression in liver and muscle, correlating with decreased mitochondrial activity.
  • Deficiency in RNF126 resulted in impaired expression of key proteins related to mitochondrial function and biogenesis.
  • Increased oxidative stress markers were observed alongside mitochondrial damage in the livers of Rnf126 deficient mice.
  • Overexpression of RNF126 in liver cells enhanced mitophagy and reduced oxidative stress, indicating its protective role.
