Early Changes in Gut Bacteria in Mild Cognitive Impairment Reflect Alzheimer’s Disease Patterns

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Gut microbiome changes associated with Alzheimer disease were already detectable in mild cognitive impairment.

Evidence

A case-control 16S rRNA sequencing study of 78 participants (37 controls, 20 with MCI, and 21 with prodromal or mild AD) identified 16 genera associated with cognitive status and several trends across the cognitive continuum.

Caveat

The small case-control design shows association, not causation or prediction, and microbiome biomarker performance was not tested.
