How early or late maturing father lines and early feeding affect stress hormones, gut health, and growth in young and finishing pigs

Updated

Abstract

A total of 241 pigs from 21 litters were evaluated over 170 days for growth performance and cortisol concentration.

  • Late maturing pigs exhibited increased blood cortisol levels compared to early maturing pigs.
  • Early maturing pigs had a lower percentage of weight loss three days post-weaning compared to late maturing pigs.
  • During the first three days in the nursery, early maturing pigs demonstrated improved average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI).
  • Creep feeding showed no effect on initial nursery performance but benefited late maturing pigs in overall growth performance.
  • Late maturing pigs without creep feed had decreased market weights compared to other treatment groups.
  • Early maturing pigs had a poorer gain-to-feed ratio than late maturing pigs throughout the study.
