Ageing research reviews

How early life experiences are linked to aging across multiple body systems: A review and analysis

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Adverse early life circumstances were associated with faster multi-system biological aging.

Evidence

Systematic review and meta-analysis of 23 observational studies involving 344,852 participants found a significant overall association between early life circumstances and multi-system biological aging (Cohen's d = 0.18, 95% CI 0.12-0.24), with effects varying by exposure type, aging measure, age, geography, study quality, and covariate adjustment.

Caveat

Because the evidence is observational and heterogeneous across exposures, aging metrics, and study methods, the pooled result supports association rather than a single causal effect size.
