Early signs of restless legs syndrome in children and teenagers

Abstract

The average time from initial clinical sleep disturbance to a diagnosis of definite restless legs syndrome (RLS) was 11.6 years.

  • Clinical sleep disturbances were reported in all 18 children before they met criteria for definite RLS.
  • The mean age for initial sleep evaluation was 10.3 years, while the mean age for RLS diagnosis was 14.7 years.
  • Sixteen out of 18 patients had serum ferritin levels below 50 ng/mL.
  • Comorbid conditions included attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in 13 patients and parasomnias in 7.
  • Periodic leg movements during sleep were observed in 11 of 17 patients, with movements exceeding 5 per hour.
