Using Dexmedetomidine for Early Sedation in Critically Ill Patients

Updated

Abstract

Among 3904 critically ill patients, 29.1% in both the dexmedetomidine and usual-care groups died by 90 days.

  • There was no difference in the death rate at 90 days between patients receiving dexmedetomidine and those receiving usual sedative care.
  • Patients in the dexmedetomidine group frequently required additional sedatives to maintain the desired sedation level.
  • Bradycardia and hypotension were reported more often in the dexmedetomidine group compared to the usual-care group.
