Earplugs and eye masks may improve sleep quality in intensive care patients: A review and combined analysis

A total of 797 patients from 13 studies showed significant improvements in sleep quality with the use of earplugs and eye masks.

  • Self-reported sleep quality improved significantly, with an overall effect size of 1.44.
  • The use of eye masks alone had a significant effect on sleep quality, with an effect size of 1.56.
  • Earplugs alone did not significantly impact sleep quality, with an effect size of 0.07.
  • The combination of earplugs and eye masks produced the largest effect size on sleep quality, at 2.08.
