New mRNA vaccines based on EG95 may provide long-lasting protection against echinococcosis

Updated

Abstract

Immunization with three novel mRNA-LNP vaccines led to high levels of specific antibodies that persisted for over 12 months post-vaccination.

  • Three mRNA-LNP vaccines were developed, including one that combines EG95 with IL-4 to enhance immune response.
  • The vaccines showed robust expression of target proteins in both laboratory and living organisms.
  • Immunization resulted in significantly stronger and longer-lasting immune responses compared to a conventional EG95 subunit vaccine.
  • Challenge experiments indicated that the mRNA-LNP vaccines, particularly the IL-4-EG95 variant, provided superior protection against parasite survival and cyst growth.
  • These findings suggest that mRNA-based vaccines may offer advantages in safety and effectiveness for controlling cystic echinococcosis.
