Electroacupuncture may affect cell recycling in knee joint tissue of rats with osteoarthritis by influencing a key cell signaling pathway

Updated

Abstract

Electroacupuncture significantly decreased the Lequesne MG score of knee joint function in rats with osteoarthritis (<0.01).

  • The model group exhibited increased synovial collagen fiber proliferation and inflammatory cell infiltration compared to the normal group.
  • Autophagy-related proteins Atg5 and Atg12 were significantly elevated in the model group (<0.01).
  • Expressions of PI3K, Akt, and mTOR mRNA and protein were significantly decreased in the model group (<0.01).
  • In the EA group, knee joint function improved, with reduced collagen proliferation and inflammatory cell infiltration.
  • Autophagosome and autolysosome counts were decreased in the EA group compared to the model group (<0.01).
  • The mechanism of EA may involve activation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway.
