Electroacupuncture at Specific Points Reduces Kidney Damage by Lowering Oxidative Stress in Rats with Diabetic Kidney Disease

Updated

Abstract

Electroacupuncture significantly increased the expression of FoxO1 and PGC-1α in the kidneys of diabetic nephropathy rats.

  • Diabetic nephropathy was induced in rats through a high-fat, high-glucose diet and streptozotocin injection.
  • Compared to normal controls, diabetic nephropathy rats showed reduced body mass and antioxidant activity, along with increased blood glucose and markers of kidney damage.
  • Electroacupuncture treatment improved body mass and antioxidant enzyme activity while elevating FoxO1 and PGC-1α levels.
  • Treatment with an inhibitor targeting FoxO1 reduced the effectiveness of electroacupuncture in improving kidney function.
  • Electron microscopy revealed kidney tissue damage in the diabetic model, which was less severe following electroacupuncture treatment.
