Electroacupuncture (EA) may reduce early postoperative cognitive decline in older surgical patients.

  • Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND) are linked to impaired recovery and increased postoperative morbidity.
  • Preclinical studies indicate that EA may influence multiple pathological processes such as neuroinflammation and oxidative stress.
  • Animal studies provide evidence that EA could regulate specific cellular pathways associated with neuroinflammation and synaptic plasticity.
  • Clinical studies suggest that EA may improve short-term cognitive outcomes, although evidence is limited by inconsistent protocols and follow-up durations.
  • Future research is needed to establish standardized EA protocols and adequately powered trials to better understand its effects on PND.
