Electroacupuncture may reduce tau-related memory loss by affecting brain inflammation signals in P301S mice

Updated

Abstract

Short-term (1-month) electroacupuncture treatment significantly improved spatial working memory and recognition memory in P301S Tau transgenic mice.

  • Electroacupuncture reduced levels of hyperphosphorylated Tau (p-Tau) in the brain.
  • The treatment suppressed NF-κB activation, indicated by a decreased p-P65/P65 ratio.
  • NLRP3 inflammasome components and proinflammatory cytokines were downregulated following electroacupuncture.
  • Microglial hyperactivation was mitigated with both short-term and long-term electroacupuncture interventions.
  • Long-term (3-month) electroacupuncture treatment sustained the reduction of p-Tau and neuroinflammation, supporting cognitive benefits.
