Using Brain Activity Monitoring to Guide Anesthesia and Its Link to Delirium in Older Adults After Heart Surgery

Abstract

Delirium occurred in 18.15% of patients receiving EEG-guided anesthesia and 18.10% of those receiving usual care, showing no significant difference.

  • EEG-guided anesthesia was administered to 567 patients, while 573 received usual care.
  • Both groups had similar rates of postoperative delirium, with 102 cases in the EEG-guided group and 103 in the usual care group.
  • The median volatile anesthetic concentration was 0.14 lower in the EEG-guided group compared to usual care.
  • Patients in the EEG-guided group experienced 7.7 minutes less total time with EEG suppression.
  • There were no significant differences in intensive care unit or hospital stay lengths between the two groups.
  • Medical complications were slightly lower in the EEG-guided group (11.3%) compared to the usual care group (12.7%).
