Natural multi-day cycles of epilepsy in rats

Updated

Abstract

Chronic EEG data analysis in male epileptic rats revealed interictal epileptiform activity rhythms with periodicity of about 2-3 and 5-7 days.

  • Epilepsy may exhibit cyclical patterns in brain activity across different time scales, including circadian and multidien rhythms.
  • Seizures appear to cluster at specific phases of these underlying rhythms, indicating critical times of increased seizure risk.
  • Multidien rhythms observed were not synchronized among different rats or with human interventions, suggesting an internal timing mechanism.
  • Factors influencing the timing of seizures across species remain unknown but are associated with these cyclical patterns.
