Enrofloxacin Disturbs Gut Microbes and Their Communication with the Brain in Marine Medaka

Updated

Abstract

Enrofloxacin (ENR) exposure impaired intestinal function in marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) and was associated with behavioral abnormalities, neurotoxicity, and liver injury.

  • ENR exposure caused gut microbiome imbalances and changes in short chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels.
  • Behavioral abnormalities and neurotoxicity were observed in fish following ENR exposure.
  • Increased susceptibility to Vibrio parahemolyticus infection was noted in ENR-pretreated fish.
  • Disruption of the microbiome-gut-brain axis may be linked to ENR-induced neurotoxic effects.
  • Findings highlight the ecological risks of ENR in marine environments and aquaculture.
