How the clock gene Bmal1 controls the lining of the gut

Updated

Abstract

Loss of the core clock gene Bmal1 in mouse colon epithelial cells is associated with delayed injury resolution and exacerbated colitis in males.

  • Circadian rhythms play a role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis.
  • Bmal1 promotes colon mucus production, which is greater when mice are active and feeding.
  • Loss of Bmal1 reduces mucus production but does not affect tissue appearance until after injury.
  • Bmal1 loss leads to worse colitis outcomes specifically in male mice.
  • Epithelial clock rhythms may be necessary for effective colon barrier function.
