Stress between cell energy centers and their partners in asthma

Abstract

Mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum membranes (MAMs) may play a role in asthma pathogenesis by linking stress signals to mitochondrial dysfunction.

  • Asthma-related stimuli can disrupt both endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondrial balance.
  • MAMs are not universally indicative of all ER stress or mitochondrial dysfunction but relate to specific stress signals.
  • Evidence suggests that inflammatory responses in monocytes/macrophages involve Ca²⁺ transfer and mitochondrial stress linked to MAMs.
  • Airway epithelial cells and smooth muscle cells show mitochondrial dysfunction and Ca²⁺ dysregulation, but direct evidence of MAM remodeling is limited.
  • MAM biology could be important in asthma, but more studies are needed to clarify its specific roles and mechanisms.
