Ergothioneine reduces age-related weakening of daily body rhythms

Abstract

Chronic treatment with ergothioneine (EGT) enhanced the amplitude of the circadian rhythm in a dose-dependent manner.

  • Aging is associated with a decline in circadian clock function, characterized by reduced amplitude and increased variability.
  • Decreased levels of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and SIRT1 activity may contribute to age-related circadian disruption.
  • EGT treatment significantly restored rhythm amplitude and reduced variability in cells with NAD+ depletion induced by FK866.
  • EGT increased the NAD+/NADH ratio and elevated NAD+ levels under conditions of NAD+ depletion.
  • The effects of EGT are not solely due to cytoprotection but may involve improvements in redox balance and NAD+ metabolism.
