Planned Alcohol Use During Pregnancy and Its Impact on Offspring Heart Cell Cleanup Through TRPM2 Channels Linked to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Heart Problems

Abstract

Cardiac TRPM2 expression was significantly up-regulated in a sex-dependent manner following prenatal alcohol exposure.

  • Fetal alcohol exposure led to myocardial damage, including inflammatory infiltration and cardiomyocyte degeneration.
  • Autophagy-related markers were dysregulated, particularly in female offspring.
  • Increased levels of stress-related proteins JNK, AKT, mTOR, and the injury marker S100 were noted in cardiac tissues.
  • Offspring exhibited significant impairments in spatial learning and memory as measured by the Morris water maze test.
  • TRPM2 upregulation may act as a central mediator of alcohol-induced fetal cardiac injury, influencing autophagy pathways.
