Later sleep timing and risk of dementia and its types after considering other sleep habits: A long-term study

Updated

Abstract

In a cohort of 443,906 dementia-free participants, evening chronotype was associated with a 7% increased risk of all-cause dementia over a mean follow-up of 12.5 years.

  • Evening chronotype showed a specific association with a higher risk of 'other dementias' (HR, 1.12).
  • There was no significant association between evening chronotype and Alzheimer's disease or vascular dementia.
  • Participants with infrequent social visits exhibited a higher risk of all-cause dementia linked to evening chronotype.
  • Usual napping was associated with an increased risk of vascular dementia among those with evening chronotype.
  • The association between evening chronotype and dementia risk may act as a risk marker rather than indicating a direct causal relationship.
