Evening sleep patterns are linked to hormone and metabolism problems in polycystic ovary syndrome

Abstract

Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) exhibited a lower chronotype score and a higher prevalence of evening chronotype compared to healthy controls.

  • The study involved 112 women with PCOS and 112 age and body mass index-matched healthy women.
  • Women with PCOS had a significantly higher prevalence of the evening chronotype category (p = .037).
  • A negative correlation was found between chronotype score and inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP) levels (r = -0.418, p < .001).
  • Chronotype score was also negatively correlated with testosterone levels (r = -0.543, p < .001) and the Ferriman-Gallwey score (r = -0.514, p < .001).
  • Linear regression identified high testosterone levels as a major factor associated with lower chronotype scores (p < .001).
