Longer lifespan and slower ageing in a group of tropical butterflies
Updated
Abstract
Heliconius butterflies exhibit a three-fold lifespan extension compared to their close relatives in the Heliconiini tribe.
- Maximum lifespans in some Heliconius species approach nearly one year.
- Captive experiments indicate that lifespan extension is associated with slowed actuarial ageing.
- Physiological ageing also appears to be slowed in long-lived Heliconius butterflies.
- Data were gathered from commercial butterfly houses, mark-release-recapture studies, and insectary populations.
