How exercise intensity and length relate to nighttime heart rate changes and sleep quality

Abstract

Increased exercise intensity elevated nocturnal heart rate compared to control day (p < 0.001).

  • Nocturnal heart rate variability (HRV) was not affected by exercise intensity.
  • Nocturnal heart rate was higher after 90 minutes of exercise compared to both 30 and 60 minutes (p < 0.01).
  • Nocturnal HRV decreased after the 90-minute exercise day compared to control day (p < 0.01).
  • Neither exercise intensity nor duration influenced actigraphic or subjective sleep quality.
  • Delayed recovery of nocturnal cardiac autonomic modulation may result from increased exercise intensity and/or duration.
