Exercise training to improve fitness and quality of life in people with non-cancer lung diseases caused by dust exposure

Abstract

Exercise training resulted in a mean increase of 53.81 metres in six-minute walk distance (6MWD) in participants with non-malignant dust-related respiratory diseases.

  • Two randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with a total of 40 participants were included in the analysis.
  • Exercise training showed improvements in health-related quality of life across multiple domains, including dyspnoea, fatigue, emotional function, and mastery.
  • Similar improvements were observed in participants with dust-related interstitial lung diseases and asbestos-related pleural disease.
  • No adverse events were reported from the exercise training interventions.
  • Despite observed improvements, the quality of evidence is considered very low due to small sample sizes and other limitations.
