Abstract

Exendin-4 (Ex-4) demonstrated a GLP-1R-dependent neuroprotective effect on retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) under ischemia-reperfusion injury.

  • Vascular endothelial cells-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) mediate the protective effect of Ex-4 on RGCs during acute retinal ischemia-reperfusion injury.
  • miR-450b-5p was identified as a highly enriched microRNA in EVs from Ex-4 treated cells.
  • Treatment with either Ex-4-derived EVs or miR-450b-5p mimics significantly decreased RGC injury caused by ischemia-reperfusion.
  • The acyl-coenzyme A synthetase long-chain family member 4 (ACSL4) was identified as a direct target of miR-450b-5p.
