How Explaining Wearable Data Can Be Used: A Review of Research

Twenty-five research papers were analyzed to explore the integration of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) in wearable health care technologies.

  • Wrist-worn wearables like Fitbit and Empatica E4 are commonly used in health care applications.
  • There is a significant need to improve the explainability of data generated by these devices.
  • Post hoc explainability methods, particularly Shapley Additive Explanations, are preferred for their adaptability in visualizing complex algorithm outputs.
  • The common presentation of explainability outputs includes graphs and user-friendly reports.
  • User evaluation in the development of these technologies is currently limited, indicating a need for greater user involvement.
