Understanding How Bats Live Longer Through Their Life Traits and Gene Comparisons

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Extended bat lifespans appear to reflect multiple ecological predictors and genomic strategies rather than one universal mechanism.

Evidence

Phylogenetic regression of 24 life-history traits from 101 bat species and comparative genomics of 39 bat genomes associated maximum longevity with female sexual maturity, latitude, body mass, and candidate pathways including DNA repair, immunity, mitochondrial function, and lipid metabolism.

Caveat

Cross-species regression and comparative genomics nominate candidate mechanisms, not causal tests that these pathways extend lifespan within individual bats or humans.
