Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are associated with enhanced therapeutic potential when integrated with bioengineered materials.

  • Rapid clearance and poor targeting currently limit the efficacy of EVs in clinical applications.
  • Recent bioengineering advancements allow for the integration of EVs with materials such as hydrogels and scaffolds.
  • Different sources of EVs, including tissue-resident cells and stem cells, offer varying advantages and limitations.
  • Various immobilization techniques, from physical entrapment to covalent binding, are employed for EVs.
  • Challenges in clinical translation of EV-biomaterial hybrids are discussed, along with potential solutions to accelerate development.
