Obesity surgery

Weight loss, body changes, and appetite hormones in healthy women with obesity following fasting-like diet or steady calorie cutting

Updated

Abstract

Mean weight change was -2.29 kg for continuous energy restriction (CER) and -1.13 kg for fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) with no significant difference (p = 0.06).

  • FMD showed favorable effects on fat mass and muscle mass compared to CER.
  • Insulin resistance was reduced in the FMD group, although this finding was not statistically significant after adjustment.
  • Following CER, serum levels of total ghrelin and neuropeptide Y (NPY) significantly increased, while leptin levels did not show a significant change.
  • There was a greater reduction in basal metabolic rate (BMR) in the CER group (p = 0.045).
  • Both FMD and CER resulted in similar weight loss outcomes over the study period.
