Combined iron-copper scaffold and magnetic stimulation may promote linked blood vessel and bone growth for bone healing

Abstract

The novel scaffolds incorporating bimetallic FeCu-metal-organic framework (FeCu-MOF) significantly enhanced bone regeneration and vascularization.

  • The engineered scaffolds allowed for the controlled co-release of iron and copper ions.
  • Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) stimulation was applied to increase the scaffolds' bioactivity.
  • Scaffolds exhibited excellent biocompatibility and promoted the proliferation and differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells.
  • The combination of FeCu-MOF scaffolds and PEMF treatment resulted in superior vascularized bone formation compared to scaffolds alone.
  • Analysis showed increased bone volume, density, and improved tissue architecture in a rat cranial defect model.
