Safety and Effectiveness of Gut Bacteria Transplants for Reducing Parkinson's Disease Symptoms in a Controlled Study

Updated

Abstract

Essence

A single fecal microbiota transplant did not improve motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease over 12 months, though some non-motor symptoms improved at certain timepoints.

Evidence

This randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded trial assigned 59 patients with Parkinson's disease to donor fecal microbiota or auto-fecal placebo via colonoscopy and found no significant between-group difference in MDS-UPDRS III OFF-state score at 12 months (1.50 points, 95% CI -4.28 to 7.28; p = 1.00).

Caveat

The main motor endpoint was null after a single transplant in a small trial, so any apparent non-motor benefits are secondary and timepoint-specific rather than proof of broad efficacy.
