How fentanyl and 2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylamphetamine together affect breathing in monkeys

Updated

Abstract

Essence

DOM may worsen fentanyl-induced ventilatory depression, suggesting a potential overdose-related risk when this hallucinogen is combined with fentanyl.

Evidence

Preclinical head plethysmography experiment in six rhesus monkeys tested fentanyl 0.001-0.1 mg/kg and DOM 0.01-0.32 mg/kg alone and in pairwise mixtures.

Caveat

The interaction appeared in a majority of monkeys, and it remains unclear whether the finding extends to other opioids or similar drugs.
